New advantages for maintenance workers

Finally, unions and the Federation of cleaning companies signed a new collective agreement for this sector employing nearly 11,200 employees. And if financial gains emerge, certain administrative advances are also far from being negligible.

Months and months that the situation got bogged down. The renegotiation of the collective agreement for building cleaning employees more of a dialogue between the deaf than of negotiation. But since Monday, employers and staff representatives have managed to agree on a new text guaranteeing rights until April 2024. And among the advances, we note in particular the employer’s promise toincrease the hourly rate by 0.5% from the next indexation and no later than March 1, 2022.

The OGBL demands that people providing maintenance in the health services be placed as a priority for vaccination. The Ministry of Health replied that it was currently working on the integration of certain subcontractors in its campaign.


Such an increase (+ 0.5%) is also scheduled for January 1, 2024, regardless of inflation. But on the side of the OGBL, the majority union in the branch, the new negotiated collective agreement is not limited to that. And Estelle Winter, central secretary, also evoke the increase in the number of days of leave according to seniority. “From 16 years of service, the employee may be entitled to 27 days of annual vacation (26 + 1), a figure which will rise to 28 from 26 years of seniority”.

In case of transfer

Still on the rest side, the new text co-signed with the Federation of cleaning companies also now includes the obligation, in the event of transfer of a maintenance contract from one company to another (with takeover of agents) to “also transfer fully accrued leave for the year ”, which was not necessarily the case in all circumstances.



The cleaning staff have never stopped working since the start of the health crisis. However, his working conditions remain far from idyllic. Manuela Pestana testifies and commits for more recognition.


In addition, no more employee in this sector of activity will have to pay to obtain his payslip. “It seems absurd, but some companies were asking for up to 5 euros to edit this document,” notes the unionist. From now on, an employee may also refuse to borrow their private vehicle to travel between two sites if the mission is not indicated on the required form. Here again, a point which was far from being clarified previously when many transfers of personnel were carried out in their personal cars.

Finally, the social partners wanting to avoid reliving the quagmire of recent months, an agreement has been reached so that the next renegotiation of the collective agreement does not take place at the last moment. So one year before the end of the current text, at the beginning of 2023, everyone will meet around the table to discuss future arrangements.
