The chair left empty since April 1 by the departure of the secretary general of Aleba will find a new occupant with the appointment of the current vice-president of the main union of the Place. A position held on an interim basis “at least until 2022”.

Roberto Mendolia was finally faster than expected to replace Laurent Mertz. If the president of Aleba had indicated, at the end of March, that he gave himself “until mid-June” to find the new secretary general of the main union of the Place, the name of Delphine Nicolay should be officially validated on Friday within the board of directors.

While the main union of the Place has just lost its sectoral representativeness, other changes are taking place in its management, with the announcement on Wednesday of the departure of Laurent Mertz. The latter wishes “to find functions close to the field”.

Current vice-president of the union and member of the executive committee, the latter should occupy the function “only on an interim basis for a few months”, indicates Roberto Mendolia who believes that the mission should extend “at least until 2022”. Presented by the president of the union as “a very committed, charismatic person and not afraid to face the press”, the new general secretary of Aleba should take up her duties in the coming days and concentrate on “missions purely linked to the general secretariat ”.

Asked about the reasons that led her to accept this mission, for a limited period in time, moreover, Delphine Nicolay assures that she wants to “support Roberto Mendolia in the noble causes he defends”. In particular what she describes as “the fight for trade union freedoms and representativeness for Aleba but also for all employees of the country”. Indirect reference in particular to the ongoing legal battle aimed at allowing the union to be representative again. Whether at sectoral or even national level.

Unprecedented, Dan Kersch’s decision to withdraw the sectoral representativeness of Aleba is “an application of the law and certainly not a political decision”, assures the Minister of Labor on Friday. Because the latter already fears the consequences for social dialogue.

If the employee of the Bank of New York Mellon specifies “to have thought a lot” before accepting the position, she also wishes to indicate that “one should not expect that I am the image of Laurent Mertz” . For the record, the latter had decided to leave the position of number two of the union in mid-March after having occupied the function for eight years to “find functions close to the field”.
