Vacation, work and also studying abroad have been subject to change since the corona pandemic. That puts even the most prestigious universities in the world in financial difficulties. In particular, universities in the US Ivy League and the United Kingdom have been able to charge high fees from foreign students thanks to their excellent reputation. In Asia in particular, Harvard and Oxford were coveted on the résumé in order to lay the foundation for a steep career. The corona crisis is also creating new conditions here.
Corona crisis at Harvard
Even Harvard University quickly felt the effects of the pandemic. It reported an operating deficit of $ 10 million for the fiscal year ended June 2020. Sales fell three percent to $ 5.4 billion. In the previous year there had been growth of 5.7 percent and a surplus of 308 million dollars. In view of the falling number of enrollments and rising costs for necessary renovations, that was probably only the beginning of the crisis, as the university had to report in October 2020.
It remains to be seen whether the radiance of the leading universities around the world will continue to exist in times of online teaching, when students sit at home in front of their computers instead of in venerable libraries. It must also be shown how the university rankings, which have so far been so prestigious for their part, get through the current education crisis, and whether and how quickly they can reflect the new situation in their assessments.
University ranking 2021
One of the best-known lists of its kind is that of “Times Higher Education”. According to their own statements, the experts of the British weekly magazine examined more than 1,500 universities in 93 countries and regions for the current issue. The quality of teaching was last evaluated between November 2019 and February 2020, so it largely reflects the pre-Corona situation. 30 percent of the teaching was included in the final grade. Research (volume, income, reputation) and its influence (measured by the number of citations) each accounted for 30 percent. The international orientation of a university and its income were also taken into account.
According to the ranking, these are the best universities in the world.
@University of Chicago
# 10 Chicago
The USA dominates the list of the ten best universities in the “Times Higher Education” ranking for 2021. Eight of the top universities come from the United States. The University of Chicago in tenth place shows that there is far more to it than the East Coast Ivy League. It was able to improve by one place compared to the previous year and displaced Imperial College London from the top 10.
# 9 Princeton
Three of the eight universities in the Ivy League can be found in the ranking. Princeton University starts out in ninth place. The traditional university halfway between New York City and Philadelphia lost three places compared to the 2020 ranking. Last year she was able to defend her sixth place.
# 8 Yale
As in 2020 and 2019, Yale University was in eighth place and overtook Ivy League competitor Princeton. The educational institution was founded in 1701, making it the third oldest university in the United States.

The university, founded in Cambridge, England in 1209, continued its negative trend in the ranking. In 2020 she slipped one place. In 2021, Cambridge dropped three places to sixth.
# 5 WITH
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is located in the US university city of Cambridge. The high-tech management team was able to hold fifth place. In the previous year it had slipped down one rank.

Harvard University achieved the second-largest rise in the top 10. The epitome of the Ivy League had fallen by one place to seventh in 2020. In the current ranking, Harvard improved to third place.
# 2 Stanford
According to the experts, California has replaced the US east coast as the center of the American university landscape. They named Stanford University the best institution in the country. She took over this title from the California Institute of Technology. Stanford rose from fourth to second place. The college made the nearby city of Palo Alto one of the United States’ IT hubs.
# 1 Oxford
According to the Times Higher Education ranking, Oxford remains the best university in the world. The experts named the oldest English-speaking university the front runner for the fifth time in a row. The best European university outside the United Kingdom was again the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. However, it fell one place to 13th. China moved into the top 20 for the first time with Tsinghua University. It rose from 23rd to 20th place. Among the German universities, the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich again performed best. She held 32nd place last year.
