University RankingTop 10 of the world’s best universities

Vacation, work and also studying abroad have been subject to change since the corona pandemic. That puts even the most prestigious universities in the world in financial difficulties. In particular, universities in the US Ivy League and the United Kingdom have been able to charge high fees from foreign students thanks to their excellent reputation. In Asia in particular, Harvard and Oxford were coveted on the résumé in order to lay the foundation for a steep career. The corona crisis is also creating new conditions here.

Corona crisis at Harvard

Even Harvard University quickly felt the effects of the pandemic. It reported an operating deficit of $ 10 million for the fiscal year ended June 2020. Sales fell three percent to $ 5.4 billion. In the previous year there had been growth of 5.7 percent and a surplus of 308 million dollars. In view of the falling number of enrollments and rising costs for necessary renovations, that was probably only the beginning of the crisis, as the university had to report in October 2020.

It remains to be seen whether the radiance of the leading universities around the world will continue to exist in times of online teaching, when students sit at home in front of their computers instead of in venerable libraries. It must also be shown how the university rankings, which have so far been so prestigious for their part, get through the current education crisis, and whether and how quickly they can reflect the new situation in their assessments.

University ranking 2021

One of the best-known lists of its kind is that of “Times Higher Education”. According to their own statements, the experts of the British weekly magazine examined more than 1,500 universities in 93 countries and regions for the current issue. The quality of teaching was last evaluated between November 2019 and February 2020, so it largely reflects the pre-Corona situation. 30 percent of the teaching was included in the final grade. Research (volume, income, reputation) and its influence (measured by the number of citations) each accounted for 30 percent. The international orientation of a university and its income were also taken into account.

According to the ranking, these are the best universities in the world.
