From June 10, flying to Moscow from Findel will be authorized again, Russian health authorities announced on Monday. Like six other destinations, Luxembourg is now officially considered to have a stable health situation. This decision, which also concerns Morocco, Lebanon, Austria, Hungary, the Republic of Mauritius and Croatia, is a first for Russia, whose external borders have been closed since February 2020.

The resumption of flights between Moscow and the Grand Duchy will be carried out on a weekly basis, whether via Lufthansa, KLM or Aeroflot. And therefore via stopovers either via Frankfurt, Zurich or Vienna. The idea of ​​a direct link, mentioned in 2012 by Jean-Claude Juncker (CSV) and then relaunched in 2018 by Etienne Schneider (LSAP) in order to meet “not only the needs of a good number of Luxembourg companies active in Russia and vice versa. versa, but would also have a positive impact on tourism in both directions, ”according to the statement from the Ministry of the Economy, has been in decline since then.

According to figures put forward by Jean-Claude Knebeler, former Luxembourg Ambassador to Moscow, only a dozen Luxembourgers were officially registered with the Grand Ducal consular services in Russia. No data on the number of passengers traveling between the two capitals each year is available in Lux-Airport’s annual reports.
