According to the company legend, Heinrich Engelhard Steinweg is said to have built his very first grand piano in the kitchen of his home in Seesen in the Harz Mountains – secretly. In his own workshop, only the repair of instruments was allowed, not the construction. But that’s exactly how he later became world famous.
In Steinweg’s youth it did not look like he would one day become a successful entrepreneur. His life story was marked by strokes of fate: first his mother died, then he lost his brothers and father at the age of 15 – allegedly in a lightning strike that surprised the family in the forest. As a result, Steinweg became an orphan and from then on had to get by on his own.
