The Germans won’t let the Corona crisis get them down. At the end of the year, two out of three German citizens (67 percent) are looking to 2021 with confidence, as the German trend of the “ARD morning magazine” has shown. This means that optimism has even increased despite – or perhaps precisely because of – the pandemic. At the end of 2018, only 60 percent of Germans said they would “rather look with confidence” to the new year. The proportion of people in the “rather worried” category fell from 38 to 31 percent.
Germans are optimistic
“Regardless of whether old or young, East or West, woman or man: In all population groups, confidence outweighs skepticism,” said the pollsters from Infratest dimap. But it is also clear: Confidence is a question of money. Among those surveyed with a household income of less than 1500 euros per month, only 53 percent were confident and 42 percent worried. On the other hand, with a household income of EUR 3500 and above, the gap widened widely with 71 percent confidence and 27 percent alarm.
There were also clear differences in the outlook for 2021 among the age groups. According to the survey, Germans up to 39 years of age were the most optimistic at 75 percent. From the age of 65, the rate fell to 61 percent. People in the east were more optimistic than people in the west (72 and 66 percent).
Negative annual balance for 2020
The Corona year gave Germans little reason to start with confidence in 2021. For every second German citizen (51 percent) 2020 was personally not a good year. After all, according to the ARD Germany trend, 46 percent drew a positive balance with regard to their own lives. As expected, 2020 performed poorly. “At the end of 2016, 71 percent assessed the year in retrospect as positive and only 26 percent negative,” it said.
According to the information, 1004 eligible voters in Germany took part in the telephone survey (landline and mobile) from December 7th to 9th.
