EU strengthens consumers against Google, Facebook and Amazon

20 years after the last rules of the game for digital services and online platforms, the EU Commission proposed new laws. The digital package is a milestone, says Daniel Gräfe. Two areas are particularly useful to consumers.

Brussels – Twenty years after the last rules of the game for digital services and online platforms, the EU Commission has proposed two laws that were urgently needed as new rules for the Internet. 20 years ago Google and Amazon were only a few years old, Facebook and Whatsapp did not yet exist. In the meantime, they have become almost dominant monopolists who have more influence than some nation states. Hate messages and false news are rampant on the large platforms. The proposed laws on digital markets and digital services are late but essential.
