Because of the corona pandemic, many trains are barely busy. The Deutsche Bahn is therefore recording billions in losses.
The second corona wave exacerbates the economic problems of Deutsche Bahn. According to information from the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung”, the federally owned company is heading for a record loss of 5.6 billion euros this year. This emerges from the documents for the supervisory board meeting on December 9th, which are available to the newspaper.
For the first half of the year, the railway had reported a loss of 3.7 billion euros. The long-distance trains are currently only used to an average of 20 percent, the regional trains to 55 to 60 percent, according to the report.
In order to compensate for the losses, the federal government promised the railways in the economic stimulus package from June an increase in equity by five billion euros. By 2024, the company expects losses of between eleven and in the worse scenario of 13.5 billion euros.
