The pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim, which has almost 6,400 employees at the Biberach research site alone, gives all employees worldwide a week of paid special leave and thus rewards their commitment in times of corona.

Biberach – Boehringer Ingelheim wants to honor the extraordinary commitment of its employees under pandemic conditions with a week’s special leave. At the turn of the year, all 51,000 employees around the world are given a week of extra paid vacation – from December 24th to January 4th.

Switch off and recharge your batteries

“The corona pandemic has had a massive impact on work and private life and has cost a lot of energy,” said a company spokesman. One is aware of the effects this could have on the well-being of employees. “During the week off, everyone should switch off together and recharge their batteries, because the next year will also be challenging,” the spokesman said.

In Biberach an der Riß, where Boehringer Ingelheim has its largest research location in the world, around 6,400 employees enjoy the special leave.

Whether in research and development, production, medicine, administration or, for example, maintenance – all employees would be given a week of special leave, according to the spokesman. However, in order to maintain the supply of patients with medicines and other services, there are individual exceptions. That means that some employees could only take the free vacation week at the beginning of the year.

Medicines and therapies against Covid-19

The pandemic demanded a lot from many employees, the spokesman said. “The organization had to stretch a lot,” he said, referring to supply chains, safety and hygiene measures, and drug development, for example. Boehringer Ingelheim is not developing a vaccine, but is researching drugs and therapies against Covid-19.

As a family company, one also pays attention to sensitivities, it said. This also includes recognizing the commitment of employees.

In any case, the pharmaceutical company is highly valued by its executives – not least because of its good management during the Corona crisis. This week, Boehringer Ingelheim received the German Chemistry Prize from the VAA chemistry management association. “Our wellbeing survey is a reliable indicator of the mood of their managers for the board members of chemical and pharmaceutical companies,” said VAA Chairman Rainer Nachtrab at the award ceremony.

Four locations in Germany

Boehringer Ingelheim, based in Ingelheim in Rhineland-Palatinate, had sales of almost 19 billion euros in 2019 and has four locations in Germany – in addition to Ingelheim and Biberach, these are Dortmund and Hanover. With almost 16,000 employees, around 30 percent of the global workforce is employed in Germany.
