The National Bank of Angola (BNA) announced on November 10, 2020, that it will put a new 2000 Kwanzas banknote into circulation on Wednesday, November 11, when the country commemorates the 45e anniversary of its accession to international sovereignty.
According to the issuing institute, this green-colored note “pays homage to one of the wonders of Angola”. This is the famous Serra da Leba, a mountain range in the province of Namibe located in the south-east of the country.
The new banknote is part of a new series of banknotes that entered into circulation on July 30, 2020 with the launch of the 200 Kwanza banknote. On September 17 it was the turn of the new 500 Kwanza banknotes and the 1er October, that of the new 1000 Kwanza banknotes.
According to the Central Bank, all banknotes of the 2012 series (previous series) will circulate simultaneously with the new banknotes of the new 2020 series until the end of December 2021. “The new 2020 series of Kwanza banknotes, inspired by the greatness of the Independent Angola and landscapes of unique beauty, contain elements of our cultural identity, symbolizing our history as a sovereign country and, therefore, enhancing our historical trajectory, ”reads a statement from the institution.
