A large number of companies are suffering from the Corona crisis. But some also benefit from it. The game manufacturer Nintendo has high sales figures.
Tokyo – Customers sitting at home because of the corona pandemic are snatching the Switch game console from Nintendo. The Japanese entertainment group screwed its forecast for the sales of the device significantly up on Thursday. In the current financial year (as of the end of March) sales of 24 million units are expected, five million more than previously assumed. The company known for the game “Super Mario” also raised its forecast for the annual result by half to 450 billion yen (3.7 billion euros).
From April to September – when there were restrictions on public life in many countries due to the corona pandemic – operating profit tripled to 291 billion yen (2.4 billion euros), as Nintendo announced. The Kyoto-based company has been reluctant to raise its switch sales forecast. But renewed lockdowns in many countries are likely to keep demand high for a longer period of time, the company said. Nintendo sold 12.5 million Switch devices in the first half of the year. The game console has been on the market for four years.
Sony also reports high demand for its new Playstation 5 game console, which is due to hit the market soon. The Japanese group posted a record profit in the past quarter due to the booming games business and raised its profit target for the current financial year.
