While the automotive supplier Delphi Technologies has officially been in the hands of the American firm since the beginning of October, concern is growing among staff representatives who hope to avoid an “almost complete dismantling” of the group’s activities on its Luxembourg site.

(ASdN) – Barely a month after the takeover of automotive supplier Delphi Technologies by BorgWarner, concerns remain on the side of employee representatives. In question, the fear of a drastic reduction in the number of employees of the company in the Grand Duchy. It was in this context that a delegation from the OGBL met the Minister of the Economy, Franz Fayot (LSAP) at the end of October.

During the interview, the Luxembourg union expressed its concerns, but also its demands for the future of the activities of the electricity branch of BorgWarner in the Grand Duchy. The organization fears in fact an “almost complete dismantling of activities related to combustion engines and the ” components ”” division and calls on the new owner to quickly announce his directions for Delphi. And in particular its investment strategy and its employment guarantee.

The buyback was finalized in early 2020, it takes effect on October 8. Date on which the first departures of employees linked to the social plan begin.

Facing the unions, the Minister therefore encouraged BorgWarner to develop its activities in the field of electrification in the Grand Duchy “as far as possible”. Franz Fayot also said he was ready to meet the new local leaders after their final installation in Luxembourg and to travel to the United States as soon as the situation allows it to meet the group’s management.

A quarter of fewer employees

As a reminder, in just a decade, the equipment manufacturer has already gone through three job retention plans, four social plans as well as several sales of partial activities. The last social plan dates from last February … And if the crisis may have delayed departures, downsizing resumed as soon as the takeover by BorgWarner was formalized in early October.

Already present in 19 countries and with nearly 70 production sites, the world leader in the field of clean and efficient technological solutions for combustion, hybrid and electric vehicles still currently employs around 400 people at its Bascharage site in Luxembourg compared to 750 employees in 2008. By next year, the workforce should be limited to 300 employees, or a quarter of a month than at present.
