More than a year after the bankruptcy of the Sonia Rykiel fashion house, the brand is back. The online retailer Showroomprivé opened the virtual shop on Tuesday. “Iconic pieces” by the designer who died in 2016 are on offer. According to Showroomprivé, they are sold to customers around the world “at more than 100 destinations” and “in more than 30 currencies”.
Rykiel, “Queen of Knitting”, had founded her fashion company during the student riots in Paris in 1968. Their comfortable and chic knitted dresses gave the women freedom of movement. Her fashion is aimed at “the woman who loves life, likes to eat, likes to move”, she once said.
Fashion house was dissolved in 2019
Her fashion house was closed in the summer of 2019 because no buyer could be found. The company ran into financial difficulties after the designer died. Brothers Eric and Michael Dayan, founders of the online shopping club Showroomprivé, bought the brand, inventory and archive in December 2019.
At the time, they announced that they would let the brand “shine again” in France and internationally. Rykiel’s fashion is “a figurehead of French culture”. Showroomprivé sells discounted luxury clothing in France and eight other countries.
