With this, the brewer enters a new market in addition to its varied range of beers. Spijked & is alcoholic sparkling water with 4.7% and five times distilled alcohol. It contains 65 Kcal and less than 1 gram of sugar per 250ml can. Spijked & is vegan and gluten-free and available in four flavors: Lemon, Cherry, Wild Berries and the first of its kind: Seaweed.
Restoring the ocean’s ecosystem through seaweed cultivation
Spijked & has a maritime appearance, which fits seamlessly with the collaboration with The Seaweed Company. Swinkels Family Brewers has teamed up with this scale-up to bring sustainable seaweed cultivation to the attention. Seaweed plays an important role in the recovery of the ocean and for every can of Spijked & sold, a contribution is made to a new piece of seaweed farm the size of an A4 to further develop seaweed cultivation.
The brand name Spijked & is based on the English word “Spike”, which means alcoholizing sparkling water. In the US, this type of drink is also known as a “Spiked Seltzer”. The “ij” in Spijked & shows the brand’s Dutch origins.
Gijs Swinkels, CCO at Swinkels Family Brewers: “Spijked & responds to the growing trend of the modern consumer, who are increasingly making brand choices and decisions that fit their lifestyle and beliefs. The Hard Seltzer range from Spijked & is a “better-for-you” alternative for the health and environmentally conscious consumer who is looking for a refreshing alcoholic drink that is both low in calories and tasty. We believe that Spijked & has a lot of potential. This was recently proven when the Wild Berries variant tasted blind and became the number 2 of the 69 Hard Seltzer brands at the Swedish Systembolaget. That is why the product will be for sale there from the summer of 2021 and that naturally gives a lot of confidence for the future of this new product within our range. “
Investing in sustainable initiatives is extremely important to our family business
Swinkels: “Investing in sustainable initiatives is extremely important to our family business. We think in generations, not years. This focus has led us to start the collaboration with The Seaweed Company. This fits perfectly in our sustainability and circularity strategy. “
Joost Wouters, SeaEO at The Seaweed Company: “We are very excited about the collaboration with Spijked & and the opportunity to build more seaweed farms. Seaweed makes an important contribution to the recovery of our oceans. It does not need land, fertilizer or fresh water to grow, it absorbs a lot of CO₂ and it enriches marine biodiversity. Seaweed has many valuable uses that contribute to the health and wellbeing of people, animals and plants, and we look forward to working with Spijked & meer to build seaweed farms and accelerate the cultivation of this unique untapped natural resource. “
