Airbus without new orders – Boeing paints a gloomy picture of the industry

The airlines are currently hardly ordering planes from Airbus or Boeing. In September, Airbus did not receive a single new order. However, the European aircraft manufacturer delivers machines. Boeing, on the other hand, is not only fighting the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic.

First things first about Airbus and Boeing:

  • Airbus delivers more aircraft than competitor Boeing
  • Boeing expects years of consolidation in the aviation industry

The corona crisis continues to affect aircraft manufacturers. Since the airlines have to put the brakes on costs due to travel restrictions as a result of the coronavirus pandemic in order to ensure their survival, they are canceling aircraft orders or trying to restructure the order. For this reason, Airbus did not receive a single new order in September.

However, the Boeing competitor announced that at least 57 machines had been delivered to customers. In the first nine months of 2020, Airbus handed over 341 aircraft to customers. This represented a decrease of 40 percent compared to the same period in the previous year.

This means that Airbus does far better than its US competitor Boeing, which was only able to deliver 87 aircraft between January and August. Boeing is not only fighting with the consequences of the Corona crisis. The company still suffers from the flight ban for the 737 Max model. For the annual industry outlook, which is very negative this year, the company’s own situation has played no role.

According to Boeing, the outlook for the global aircraft market has clouded over due to the corona crisis. The Airbus competitor sees the demand for new traffic machines in the next ten years at 18,350 aircraft. This figure is eleven percent lower than the forecast a year ago.

Nevertheless: According to Boeing, airlines and leasing companies should spend a total of 2.9 trillion dollars on new planes by then. However, it will take years for air traffic to recover from the coronavirus pandemic, the group underlined. At the same time, it is assumed that airlines will replace older aircraft more quickly than before.
