Apple announces for October 23 the release of 5G, the new generation of ultra-fast mobile telephony. “The beginning of a new era,” announced Tim Cook, the boss of the firm.

(pj with AFP) – 5G is everywhere. In Luxembourg, its topicality is still divided between debates on the harmfulness of waves and the accelerated deployment of this technology, making high-speed internet accessible as never before on their mobile phones. After Post announced the deployment of its network in the capital for October 16, Apple is now unveiling its first devices open to this type of communication.

Thus Tim Cook, the boss of Apple, has just presented the new 5G iPhone range, the first of its kind for the Apple brand. More than a year after its two rivals Samsung and Huawei, Apple will now market this range at base prices ranging from $ 699 to $ 1,099. It is available with the iPhone 12, 12 Pro put on shelves from October 23 (including in the Grand Duchy), and 12 mini and 12 Pro Max from November 13.

Launched in mid-July, the auction for the allocation of ultra-fast communication frequencies has aroused the appetites of operators. In the end, four companies saw their rental offer selected by the Luxembourg Regulatory Institute. Nice jackpot.

“This is the most important new product cycle for Apple since the iPhone 6 in 2014,” commented analyst Dan Ives, Wedbush Securities. Despite these announcements, the title of Apple however unscrewed by nearly 3% on Wall Street, after having climbed Monday thanks to the anticipation of the news.

“Apple is going to do more for 5G than 5G is going to do for the new iPhones,” Thomas Husson, vice president of Forrester, commented on Twitter. Because 5G, far from upsetting everyday life for the moment, is not yet a selling point in the United States or in Europe. But the apple brand was expected as the Messiah by the industry. Its entry on the scene signals that technology can no longer be satisfied with disjointed deployments: now is the time for operators to work extra hard.

In the United States and in Europe, infrastructure has lagged behind, in particular because of the trade war between Washington and Beijing, the Chinese supplier Huawei being the leader in the sector. In Asia, on the other hand, major Chinese cities have 5G and 90% of South Korea’s population lives in served areas, according to Futuresource.

Global sales of smartphones with 5G will increase, experts say from 145 million handsets in 2020 to 303 million in 2021, and 515 million in 2022. The firm of Tim Cook could sell more than 75 million iPhone 12. Analysts estimating that more than a third of the 950 million iPhone in circulation in the world, that is to say 350 million d ‘devices, are likely to be replaced by a more recent model in the coming months.
