“Anyone who needs help should be able to get it”

Lex Delles (DP) does not close the door to an extension of the aid put in place to mitigate the economic consequences of the health crisis. But for the Minister of Middle Classes, the solution will go through a European decision.

(ER with ndp) – Emergency aid, support measures for SMEs and the self-employed or even solidarity funds, the government has put its hand in its pocket and made unprecedented efforts to reduce the economic impact of the crisis sanitary. Are these measures sufficient? Can companies count on new support in 2021? The Minister of Middle Classes took stock of the situation in an interview with the Luxemburger Wort.

“The situation varies from sector to sector and from company to company. For example in the Horeca, some hotels had an interesting summer, while establishments in the capital suffered heavy losses. There is no one situation for everyone, ”says Lex Delles.

“Set up a global package”

And the latter recalled that the government worked urgently to put in place various measures such as aid of 5,000 euros, the Recovery and Solidarity Fund but also other forms of support put in place by the State. “Companies can benefit from direct subsidies, reimbursable advances or tax advantages up to a maximum of 800,000 euros,” he says.

Out of a total of 3,680 companies which requested to benefit from the reduction in the activity of their employees for the month of July, less than 16% of them failed to return a declaration to the administration.

The problem is that this support is limited to the year 2020. But for the Minister, it is essential “to start discussions to extend certain measures” via targeted actions or even limited in time. “Anyone who still needs help should be able to get it. We are working hard for a solution at European level. This is the only way we can act to help those in need. ”

The issue of short-time work is obviously at the heart of the discussions. “For every sector of the economy, the question must be asked. Financial aid alone is not enough and partial unemployment is not the solution for everything. We need to put in place a global package that is as complete as possible, ”recalls Lex Delles.

As a reminder, the partial unemployment scheme is maintained until December 31, 2020. A sum of 1.2 billion euros has been released by the State according to estimates made by the Ministry of the Economy.
