Varta achieves record values - SAF-Holland pulls the investment brake

The stocks of the battery manufacturer Varta listed in the MDAX® are in demand on the stock exchange. The share price is at a record level. The company is now underpinning this positive development with new business figures. In contrast, the coronavirus pandemic and its effects are affecting SAF-Holland’s business. The French truck supplier had to cope with a slump in sales and earnings in the first half of the year.

The most important things about Varta and SAF-Holland in advance:

  • Varta with gratifying half-year results
  • SAF-Holland with a gloomy forecast

The German battery manufacturer Varta has no trace of the Corona crisis. In the first half of 2020, the company made significant leaps in sales and earnings, and achieved record levels. According to the CEO, all business areas have contributed to this.

From January to the end of June, according to Varta, sales rose by 158 percent to 390.7 million euros. For the first time, the acquired Varta Consumer was included. Without them, the increase in sales was 66.5 percent. The adjusted operating result (EBITDA) increased by 174 percent to 102.1 million euros. The group profit doubled to 39.8 million euros.

“All business areas contributed to this gratifying result in the first half of the year, with our lithium-ion cells continuing to record the highest growth rates,” explained CEO Herbert Schein. “With the expansion of the production capacities for lithium-ion cells to 300 million batteries by the end of 2021, we are continuing our growth path.”

In the auto industry, on the other hand, things look very different. She is struggling with the consequences of the coronavirus pandemic such as stopped production, supply chain interruptions and sales rooms that have since been closed. The supplier industry is therefore also in a real crisis. The figures from the French truck supplier SAF-Holland prove this.

According to the company, sales in the first six months of 2020 fell by 32 percent to EUR 476.3 million compared to the same period in the previous year. The adjusted operating profit even dropped by more than half to 23.7 million euros.

SAF-Holland reacted and announced, for example, a reduction in investments: They should now only be in the order of 2.5 percent instead of the previous three percent of sales. For the year as a whole, the group expects sales to decline by 20 percent, but also referred to the uncertainty that still exists in connection with the Covid 19 pandemic.
