The “silver city” Freiberg could soon revive its rich tradition: the mining office of the Free State of Saxony now has the Canadian silver producer Excellon Resources Inc. (TSX: EXN; FRA: E4X1) granted the drilling permit for the Silver City project near Bräunsdorf, northwest of Freiberg. It is the first precious metal drilling in the area in around 150 years!
Initially, 15 holes totaling 2,500 meters are planned, which are scheduled to start before the end of June. The Mining Authority has also approved 12 additional holes to continue drilling if the expected veins are successfully run. Excellon is technically supported by the partners at the Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg and the Helmholtz Institute Freiberg.
Historical silver grades of several kilograms per ton
The Silver City project encompasses a 164 square kilometer, highly mineralized epithermal silver area in Saxony (Germany), in which mining work took place for over 750 years, but no modern exploration work with a focus on precious metals has yet been carried out.

“At Silver City, we have a unique opportunity to drill holes in a historic high grade silver area,” said Ben Pullinger, SVP Geology. “The production records from the property show silver grades of several kilograms per ton of considerable thickness in the entire area.”
The first drilling on the Bräunsdorf license began at the end of June
Drilling is scheduled to begin in the second half of June 2020. The drilling contract was awarded to a drilling company with international experience following a tender process. Preparations are underway to begin work on the site soon, and the highest standards for technology, the environment and occupational safety – including all preventive measures required by the Saxon government in connection with COVID-19 – are being followed. Depending on the results of this early exploration, future drilling will be planned and permits for the related plans will be sought.
Excellon has an option to acquire a 100% interest in Globex Mining Enterprises’ Silver City project (TSX: GMX, FRA: G1MN).
Silver City has never been explored using modern exploration methods
The Silver City project is an epithermal vein system that extends over a strike length of 36 kilometers (!) In a southwest-northeast direction and a width of 1 to 5 kilometers west of the city of Freiberg (30 km southwest of Dresden) in the Free State of Saxony extends. The immediate exploration property and the surrounding area can look back on a long and rich history of silver mining with numerous historic mines, many of which have only been explored and / or mined to shallow depths, usually less than 200 meters from surface level.
Historical reports show that the veins have a thickness of 0.5 to 10 meters and grades greater than 3,500 g / t silver exhibit. Gold or zinc contents were not analyzed at that time. Petrographic and fluid entrapment studies recently performed by the Mineral Systems Analysis Group of the TU Bergakademie Freiberg indicate that the productive depth for precious metals is between 50 and 450 meters from the surface level.
