It can be financially worthwhile for employees to change their register. The magazine “Finanztest” (Issue 1/2019) informs that certain benefits have been approved on request, but a new fund does not have to take them over.

It also depends on whether treatment has already started: if not, the insured person must submit a new application to the new fund, which the insurer can also reject. If the treatment is already running, you have to inform the new fund – according to the magazine, it will not reject it.

This is how the health insurance change works

If you want to change the cash register, you must first cancel at the previous cash register. This is done in writing – preferably by registered letter with acknowledgment of receipt. The experts at Stiftung Warentest recommend that you also send an email. The cash register must confirm receipt of the cancellation in writing within 14 days. If this does not happen, it is important to follow up.

Next, you informally inform the new fund that you would like to become a member. There are usually forms for this on the website of the cash register. The confirmation of termination of the old cash register belongs in the envelope.

The notice period is two months to the end of the month. Ideally, the new fund will issue a membership certificate by the end of the month after next, which should be presented to the employer or the employment agency immediately. For example, anyone who quits in June will be a member of the new health insurance fund from September. If something doesn’t work, you simply remain insured in the old cash register.
